Announcing GitHub India
We’re bringing GitHub closer to communities in India to better serve students, developers, maintainers, enterprise customers, and everyone helping to create the future of open source.
Namaste! Today, we’re excited to announce GitHub India Private Limited, a subsidiary of GitHub, Inc. Our community in India is thriving, with the third-largest number of active developers on GitHub and 22 percent growth over the past year, adding to an already significant base. To better serve those developers and enterprise customers, we’re thrilled to bring GitHub closer by establishing a new GitHub subsidiary in India.
Maneesh Sharma, our newly appointed General Manager of GitHub India, will lead our growth strategy in the country. Over the next few months, we’re building a team across all functions—including community, engineering, sales, support, marketing, and services—to enable our customers to adopt DevOps best practices at scale and collaborate with over 40 million developers across more than 100 million projects.
Supporting the developer community
As the third-largest group of active developers on GitHub, Indian developers are truly building the future of software. Over the past year, the number of public repositories in India has grown 75 percent, demonstrating a sharp increase in collaboration across the Indian developer community. In building out a local team in India, our goal is to create stronger relationships with developers and support open source development across developers, maintainers, and enterprises.
India is also home to one of the largest communities of student developers in the world. Investing in the future of open source by empowering students is key to our efforts to support the amazing developer ecosystem in India. We’re thrilled to announce that GitHub Education is extending our popular GitHub Hackathon Grant program to students in India, which supports student hackathons with up to $1,000 in grants. We’re passionate about supporting the next generation of developers and we’re eager to help more student communities come together to learn and build on GitHub.
GitHub Enterprise
Along with support for a thriving open source community in India, a growing number of local companies, such as Swiggy and ArisGlobal, are also collaborating and building the software that powers their businesses on GitHub Enterprise. We’re working with organizations across industries to help them deliver winning customer experiences using a modern software supply chain and industry best-practices.
We’re also expanding our channel partner program to support GitHub Enterprise customers in running their software development operations effectively, and enable them to achieve their digital transformation ambitions.
